The Undersecretariat of Traffic Control of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) is increasing surveillance over the use of license plate holders and other accessories that may obstruct the visibility of license plates. During operations carried out between February 12 and March 9 in the 16 municipalities of Mexico City, nearly 500 fines were imposed.
Fines for obstructing the visibility of the plates can amount to up to two thousand 262.80 pesos, which is equivalent to 20 times the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA). Additionally, vehicles that fail to comply with this regulation may be taken to vehicle depots, resulting in additional costs for drivers and loss of time.
So far, 493 penalties have been issued, 209 payment guarantees, and 342 vehicles have been sent to the impoundment lot for the use of license plate holders. Therefore, drivers are advised to avoid placing accessories that cover the plates and to adhere to current regulations to avoid penalties.
According to the Traffic Regulations, the plates must be fully visible and cannot be blocked by any object, such as license plate holders, covers, or other decorations. The municipalities most affected by these violations so far are Azcapotzalco, Álvaro Obregón, and Miguel Hidalgo.
The SSC urges citizens to refrain from using elements that obstruct the visibility of the plates, as this not only violates the law but also hinders the identification of vehicles in cases of emergencies or violations. It is recommended to ensure that the plates are in good condition and without alterations to avoid setbacks and penalties.
